About Joshua Gilliland
I'm a drummer. I've played on stages, recorded in studios, released music with real bands, and spent years as a working musician alongside a long career in corporate technology. Music has never been a side project. It's been the thread running through everything.
I also invest in music royalties. Which means I own rights to songs that were almost certainly used to train the same AI models I now teach people to use. I have skin in this conversation on every side of it — as a human artist, as a rights holder, and as someone who builds with these tools every day.
That's not a contradiction. That's the whole point.
AI isn't replacing musicians. It's promoting them to Directors.
What I built
JG BeatsLab is an AI music education and research company. I've built a growing library of books, guides, and research reports — the Red Lab Protocol — that document what actually works in AI music production through rigorous, lab-tested methodology. I also run a mastering service, a one-on-one coaching program, and a private membership called Red Lab Access where serious creators get access to everything I publish, past and future.
What I believe
The barriers are gone. The expensive studios are apps. The gatekeepers have been removed. For the first time in history, the ability to create professional-grade music is not limited by physical skill, budget, or access.
That's not a threat to music. That's the most democratizing thing that's ever happened to it.
I teach Lane 2 — human-authored, AI-assisted. Your vision, your story, your creative direction. AI handles the execution. The human is still in the room. The human is still the point.
My background
Nearly three decades in corporate technology as a program management leader, including senior roles at Microsoft and Meta. MBA, University of Colorado Denver. I understand how to build systems, manage workflows, and execute at scale. JG BeatsLab is where that discipline meets a lifelong obsession with music.
My mission
Help musicians stop apologizing for using AI tools and start building sustainable music careers in the post-barrier world.
The Infinite Studio is open. The question is: what will you build?
