Title: 7 Things Every AI Music Creator Needs to Know About Registering Their Music

Most AI music creators are leaving money on the table.

Not because they are doing anything wrong. Because nobody told them the full picture. You get your track finished, you upload it to DistroKid, it goes live on Spotify, and you think you are done. You are not done. You have covered one of four royalty streams.

Here are the seven things I wish every AI music creator knew before they released their first track.

1. YOUR SONG HAS TWO HALVES — AND EACH ONE EARNS DIFFERENTLY

Every song you release has two distinct components treated separately under copyright law: the composition (the melody and lyrics) and the master recording (the actual audio file). These two halves earn different types of royalties, collected by different organizations, through entirely separate systems. If you only set up one side, you are only collecting half of what you are owed.

2. DISTROKID ONLY COVERS ONE OF FOUR ROYALTY STREAMS

DistroKid is your distributor. It gets your music onto Spotify, Apple Music, and about 150 other platforms, and it collects your master recording royalties from those platforms. That is genuinely important. But it is one piece of a four-part system. The other three streams require separate registrations that DistroKid does not handle for you.

3. YOUR PRO COLLECTS SONGWRITER PERFORMANCE ROYALTIES — BUT YOU HAVE TO JOIN FIRST

BMI and ASCAP are Performance Rights Organizations. They collect royalties when your music is performed publicly — on streaming platforms, radio, TV placements, restaurants, live venues. Join one (not both — pick one and stick with it) and register each song you release. If you have not joined a PRO, that royalty stream is not being collected. Nobody is holding it for you.

4. THE MLC IS THE ONE MOST CREATORS MISS ENTIRELY

The Mechanical Licensing Collective (themlc.com) collects digital mechanical royalties from interactive streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music in the United States. This is separate from what your PRO collects and separate from what DistroKid collects. Registration is free. Most independent creators never register, which means those royalties sit unclaimed. You cannot go back and reclaim them retroactively once the window closes.

5. SOUNDEXCHANGE COVERS A ROYALTY STREAM YOUR OTHER REGISTRATIONS DO NOT

SoundExchange collects digital performance royalties on the master recording from non-interactive digital services — satellite radio (SiriusXM), internet radio (Pandora), and webcasters. This is not the same as Spotify streaming royalties. It is a completely separate system. If your music plays on satellite or internet radio and you are not registered with SoundExchange, you are not collecting those royalties. Registration is free.

6. AI-ASSISTED MUSIC IS REGISTERABLE — BUT YOU NEED THE HUMAN CONTRIBUTION DOCUMENTED

Can you actually register AI-assisted music? Yes — provided there is genuine human creative contribution involved. The direction, the curation, the decisions about what stays and what goes, the arrangement choices, the additional instrumentation or lyrics you add — all of that counts. What you cannot register is purely machine-generated output with no human creative input. Document your process. Know what your contribution is before you file.

7. MISSING A REGISTRATION MEANS MISSING ROYALTIES YOU CAN NEVER RECLAIM

Royalty systems do not hold your money indefinitely waiting for you to show up. Some unclaimed royalties are redistributed. Some windows close permanently. Every track you release without completing your registrations is a track generating revenue you are not collecting — and in some cases, cannot collect later no matter what you do.

THE FULL PICTURE

Here is what a complete registration looks like for a U.S.-based independent AI music creator:

→ DistroKid — distribution and master recording royalties → BMI or ASCAP — songwriter performance royalties → The MLC (themlc.com) — digital mechanical royalties → SoundExchange (soundexchange.com) — digital performance royalties on master recordings

Four registrations. Four separate royalty streams. Most creators are only set up for one.

The Independent Creator's Guide to Getting Paid

━━━━━

You finished the track. Now what?

Most independent creators are leaving royalties on the table. Not because they didn't work hard. Because nobody ever walked them through registering their music correctly.

DistroKid gets you on Spotify. It does not register your compositions with a PRO. It does not register you with The MLC. It does not submit your recordings to SoundExchange. Those are four separate systems, four separate registrations, and four separate royalty streams... and most creators only ever set up one of them.

━━━━━

One Cog in a Larger System

Unlock Music Rights & Registration is the "getting paid" phase of the Red Lab Path. You can make incredible music all day. If the registrations are wrong, the money never finds you.

This book teaches you how the four royalty systems actually work, how to register in each one, and how to avoid the fifteen most expensive mistakes independent creators make. Without this foundation, every stream, every playlist placement, and every download is sending royalties into the void.

The other books in the Red Lab Path teach you how to make the music. This one makes sure you get paid for it.

━━━━━

What You'll Master

  • Understand the five royalty buckets: Master-side streaming, songwriter performance, songwriter mechanical, sound recording digital performance, and neighboring rights. Plain language, no legal jargon.

  • Run the DistroKid upload flow correctly: Field by field walkthrough, including the Apple Music rejection traps that block half of first-time releases.

  • Register with a PRO (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, or international equivalent): Full walkthrough for US creators plus guidance for PRS, SOCAN, GEMA, APRA, JASRAC, and the major global PROs.

  • Register with The MLC: The step most US creators skip entirely, and the one that collects your songwriter mechanicals from every streaming service.

  • Register with SoundExchange: The digital performance royalties on your sound recordings that nobody else is collecting for you.

  • Handle AI disclosure correctly: What the 2025 ASCAP / BMI / SOCAN joint policy actually requires, what the Thaler SCOTUS decision changed, what Apple Music Transparency Tags mean for your releases, and what the DDEX disclosure standard is doing across distributors.

  • Run the full release workflow: Phase 0 through Phase 7 across all four services, from mastered track to first payout.

  • Avoid fifteen expensive mistakes: Every one of them costs real money. Each one has a fix.

What This Is Not

This is not legal advice. This book is a registration workflow, not a legal guide. It does not cover US Copyright Office registration (a separate process and not required for most independent releases). It does not cover publishing deals, sync licensing contracts, or trademark questions. For legal questions specific to your situation, consult a music attorney.

This is also not a mastering guide. The workflow assumes you already have a finished, mastered, 24-bit WAV file ready to release. If you need help getting there, Unlock Reaper covers the mastering side.
