Title: Suno v5.5 Custom Models — What We Found in Testing
Suno v5.5 dropped this week with three new features. Everyone is talking about Voices.
Custom Models might actually be more important.
Here's what we found in testing.
What Custom Models Actually Do
Custom Models let you upload tracks from your own catalog to build a personalized version of the v5.5 model that knows your sound. When a Custom Model is active, it shapes every generation at the foundational level...arrangement patterns, instrumentation fingerprint, energy profile, genre behavior.
This is not a style filter. It is not a prompt modifier. It is a version of the model fine-tuned on your specific musical identity.
That's a meaningful distinction. A style prompt tells Suno what to do with a single song. A Custom Model tells Suno who you are as an artist...and holds that identity across every generation you run through it.
What Custom Models Actually Learn
This is the finding that surprised us most in testing.
Custom Models learn musical identity, not vocal identity. What comes through clearly: how your music is structured, where energy moves, which instruments and textures appear consistently, the specific flavor of genre as expressed in your catalog.
What does not come through as the primary carrier: the literal sound of a specific human voice. That's Voices' job. These two features solve different problems at different layers of the output.
Once you understand that distinction, the whole system clicks into place.
The Catalog Quality Finding
You need at least 6 tracks to build a Custom Model. You can upload significantly more if you have it.
Here's what testing confirmed: more coherent material consistently outperforms more material.
A tight set of 15 songs that all sound definitively like the same artist will outperform 30 songs that drift across different experiments and half-finished ideas. Every song in your upload set is a vote for what the model thinks your project sounds like. Experiments dilute the signal.
Build from decisions, not experiments. The songs that definitively represent the project. If a track makes you hesitate before adding it...it probably doesn't belong in the dataset.
One Thing To Know Before You Upload
Suno applies copyright detection to all uploads. The same protections that govern standard Suno use apply here. You need to own the music you train your Custom Model on.
Worth flagging: this detection uses pattern-matching heuristics rather than account-level ownership verification. In testing, an original owned song was flagged as containing copyrighted content and blocked from upload.
If you hit this, instrumental versions or alternate takes of flagged tracks are a practical workaround.
Custom Model + Persona — The Combination That Changes Everything
A Custom Model without a Persona gives you a consistent musical world with a different singer showing up every time.
A Persona without a Custom Model gives you a consistent singer performing in a generic musical context.
Together they lock both layers. Custom Model defines the band's sound. Persona defines the singer. Prompt defines the individual song.
This is the core workflow for building a consistent AI artist identity in v5.5. It's also the most significant shift the platform has made...moving from a one-shot prompt generator toward a system where you build identity infrastructure first and generate content within it.
The producers who understand that shift are going to build more consistent, more valuable, more defensible catalogs than those still approaching it as a prompt-and-pray tool.
A Few Practical Notes
Processing time after upload is 2 to 5 minutes. You can have up to 3 Custom Models active at a time. If you need a new one, delete an existing model to make space.
And one limitation worth being clear about: there's no mechanism for adding songs to an existing model or reweighting tracks after it's built. If your project evolves significantly, build a new model from an updated catalog.
What's Coming
We're putting together a full v5.5 guide covering all three features in depth...Voices, Custom Models, and My Taste. Built from real testing data, not Suno's marketing copy.
Red Lab Access members get it automatically the moment it's ready. No additional charge.
More on that very soon.
In the meantime, Unlock Suno: Studio Edition is the foundation everything else builds on.
