Loud and Flat Isn't the Same as Finished

Loudness and dynamics measure two different things, and it's easy to fix one while quietly destroying the other. A track can hit exactly the right LUFS target and still sound worse than it did before mastering, because what actually got lost wasn't level, it was movement.

What dynamic range actually captures

Loudness range measures how much a track moves between its quieter and louder moments, a restrained opening building into a fuller section, a late drop, a final rise. That movement is a real performance characteristic, not noise to be smoothed out. A track with genuine dynamic range feels like it's going somewhere. A track with none feels the same from the first second to the last, regardless of what's actually happening in the arrangement.

Most raw AI generations have little to no real arc at all, everything sitting at roughly the same intensity throughout. A track that does have real movement, real contrast between its sections, is already doing something a lot of AI output isn't.

The mistake that flattens it

The instinct once a track is loud enough on average is to push further, chasing a hotter integrated loudness number because louder sounds more finished on first listen. This is exactly backwards on a track that already has real dynamic movement. Pushing the average louder means compressing the gap between the quiet parts and the loud parts, and that gap is the arc. Flatten it enough and the track stops feeling performed and starts feeling like one long, undifferentiated wall.

The actual target

Mastering should preserve the shape that's already there, not manufacture loudness at the cost of it. If a track has a real, measured contrast between sections, treat that as something to protect, not something in the way of hitting a number. A gentle mastering pass that barely appears to be working is often exactly right on a track that already has good dynamics, the goal isn't to add movement through processing, it's to not remove the movement that's already there.

How to check you haven't flattened it

Compare loudness range before and after your master, not just integrated loudness. If the loudness range collapsed significantly while the integrated loudness climbed, that's the arc getting compressed away in exchange for a louder average. A track can hit a perfectly reasonable streaming loudness target and still have preserved real movement. Those two things aren't in conflict unless you push past what the track actually needs.

Loud and finished aren't the same thing. A track finishes when it sounds like itself, only clearer. It doesn't finish by getting flattened into a single, unchanging wall of loudness.
