Low-Mid Congestion in AI Music: How to Hear It and What Causes It
By the time a track reaches mastering, low-mid congestion has already become a repair job. Catching it earlier, while you're still generating and evaluating raw takes, saves you from building a finishing process around a foundation you should have regenerated instead.
Low-mid congestion sounds like the mix is coming through a blanket. Not distorted, not obviously broken, just thick and undefined in a way that's hard to name the first few times you hear it. Vocals feel slightly buried even when the vocal level itself seems fine. Instruments that should sound separate blur into each other. The whole track feels dense in a way that doesn't correspond to anything actually being wrong with any single element. That vagueness is exactly why it's easy to miss on a casual listen and easy to mistake for "this just needs more energy" rather than correctly identifying it as a specific frequency problem.
Why does AI generation produce this consistently, across models and platforms? Generative models build a track by layering multiple harmonic elements, often simultaneously rather than through a mixing process that actively carves space for each one. A human mix engineer routinely EQs a rhythm guitar to notch out space for the bass, or rolls off a pad's low end to leave room for the kick. A generation model isn't performing that carving step. Multiple elements with energy in the same frequency zone stack on top of each other unmanaged, and that zone is overwhelmingly the low-mid range, because that's where rhythm guitars, pads, bass harmonics, and lower vocal registers all naturally live.
In practical terms, "low-mid" means roughly 250 to 500 Hz. You don't need a frequency analyzer to identify it by ear, but knowing the range helps you understand what you're listening for: not the boom of true bass, and not the presence of the upper mids where vocal clarity and consonants sit, but the zone in between where warmth turns into mud if too much is happening there at once.
Which elements typically cause it in generated output? Sustained pads and layered rhythm instruments are the most frequent culprits, especially in tracks with a fuller, more produced arrangement. A prompt that asks for "lush" or "layered" or "wall of sound" production is, without realizing it, asking for more elements competing for the same frequency space, which raises the odds of congestion in the output. This isn't a reason to avoid those production terms. It's a reason to listen more carefully when you use them.
Can you hear this on laptop speakers, or do you need headphones? You can hear the symptom on laptop speakers, muddiness registers as a general lack of clarity even on poor playback systems, but you'll hear the specific character of it, exactly where the murk sits and how it interacts with the vocal, much more precisely on headphones or decent monitors. If you're doing early-stage evaluation on a laptop and something feels vaguely off but you can't name it, that vague feeling is worth taking seriously enough to check on better playback before moving forward with that take.
What separates congestion from an intentionally full, dense mix? Intentional density still has a discernible hierarchy: even in a packed arrangement, you can usually still track the lead vocal or lead instrument through the mix without effort. Congestion removes that hierarchy. Everything competes at the same apparent level, and following any single element requires active effort instead of happening automatically. If you find yourself having to concentrate to follow the vocal in a section that's supposed to be a normal verse, that's the sign, not simply "this section is busy."
Learning to catch this at the generation stage means fewer takes get carried forward into mastering under the false assumption that a good EQ move will fully solve what's actually a source-material problem. Some congestion is correctable in mastering. Severe congestion baked into the generation is better solved by regenerating with a leaner arrangement instruction than by trying to surgically EQ your way out of it after the fact.
