What LRA Means and Why Yours Might Be Too Narrow

A mastering scorecard flags LRA as too narrow, and the number means nothing until someone explains it. Here's the explanation.

LRA stands for Loudness Range. It measures the gap between the loudest sustained sections of your track and the quietest ones. A wide LRA means the track moves, the verse sits noticeably lower than the chorus, a bridge can drop out and breathe before the final chorus slams back in. A narrow LRA means the track sits at roughly the same intensity from the first second to the last, regardless of what's actually happening musically.

It's not the same measurement as integrated LUFS, and confusing the two is where most of the misunderstanding starts. Integrated LUFS tells you how loud the track is on average, the single number streaming platforms use to normalize playback. LRA tells you how much that loudness moves around within the track. Two tracks can sit at the exact same integrated LUFS and be completely different listens. One at -14 LUFS with an LRA of 4 feels like a wall of sound from start to finish. One at -14 LUFS with an LRA of 9 feels like it has a pulse. Same average level, opposite experience.

A narrow LRA sounds like fatigue. Nothing about the track is technically wrong, nothing clips or distorts, but by the second chorus you notice you've stopped feeling anything shift. The lift into the chorus, the drop into the bridge, doesn't register because the loudness never actually dropped enough beforehand to make the lift meaningful. It's the audio equivalent of a story told in the same tone of voice from beginning to end.

Both the generation stage and the mastering stage can cause it. On the generation side, some models produce a fairly consistent energy level across a song's structure even when the prompt asked for dynamic movement between sections, especially if the songsheet didn't explicitly direct quiet verses and explosive choruses as separate performance instructions. On the mastering side, the more common cause is over-limiting. Pushing the limiter threshold down to chase a louder average flattens the peaks that were creating contrast, and the LRA collapses as a direct consequence.

Genre changes what a healthy LRA looks like. A dense EDM track wants a tight LRA, somewhere around 4 to 7, because the genre's identity is built on sustained intensity. A cinematic or orchestral piece wants the opposite, often 12 or higher, because the loud parts only work if the quiet parts are genuinely quiet. Most commercial pop and rock material lands in the 5 to 9 range. There's no universal target. The right number depends on what the song is trying to do.

You can fix a narrow LRA in mastering, to a point. If the source material has real dynamic movement between sections and mastering flattened it with heavy limiting, backing off the limiter threshold and easing the compression ratio usually recovers a meaningful chunk of that range. But if the generation itself never produced dynamic contrast between sections, mastering can't invent movement that isn't there in the source. You can shape what exists. You can't manufacture what was never recorded.

LRA and LUFS aren't competing goals. Chasing a louder integrated LUFS by crushing the limiter doesn't make the track more competitive on streaming platforms that normalize playback anyway. It costs you the dynamic range that made the track feel alive, for no actual loudness benefit once the platform turns it down.
